NOTE

Effect of training, altitude, iron supplements, and energy availability on hepcidin levels

Hepcidin levels increase after a hard training session due to the inflammatory response. At altitude, hepcidin initially increases and then decreases. Acute increase in hepcidin occurs with iron supplementation. Splitting iron supplement dose during the day results in lower bioavailability due to the negative feedback loop of hepcidin. Hepcidin is higher in situations of poor energy availability, as evidenced in anorexic research, which may be why athletes with relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S) also have low iron levels.
