NOTE

How to Tell a Patient to Monitor Their Blood Sugar Levels

When starting someone on therapy for diabetes, it's important to determine their blood sugar levels. Before a meal, aim for less than 150 and after a meal, less than 200. The target A1C is 7 to 8, which translates to an average sugar of 150 to 180. Consider fasting sugar of 90 to 130, pre-meal sugar less than 150, and post-meal sugar less than 200. Adjust basil insulin based on morning sugar levels, increasing by 2 units every three days if above 130. Once reaching 0.5 units per kilogram, consider adding mealtime insulin.
