Choline's role in obtaining methyl groups

You can get methyl groups from sources other than five-methyl folate, such as choline and betaine, which can provide up to 50% of the necessary methyl groups. MTHFR activity can also affect the use of these sources. The glycine buffering system is affected by a lack of methyl folate, but overall, methyl folate is not the only option for methylation.
