Influence and status have always been advantageous for humans, but now, with social media, one person's actions can impact millions. Pride plays a role in our desire for status, with authentic pride coming from accomplishment and hubristic pride being self-promotion without substance. In the past, it was easier to recognize hubristic pride, but now, social media can mask it. The strange thing about status is that acknowledging it means losing the game.
