The Fibonacci sequence, starting with 1, 1, is prevalent in nature, often associated with the spirals of sunflowers, pinecones, and shells. This sequence, popularized by Leonardo Pizano in the 13th century, is not a creation of his, but was named after him due to the sequence being discussed in his book. The sequence is derived by adding the two previous numbers to produce the next one, resulting in 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, and so on. Although the sequence is not his creation, Pizano's contribution to popularizing Hindu Arabic numerals in Europe solidified his reputation as a math genius.
Math wants to be friends. Let mathematician, author and Abstract Mathematologist Dr. Eugenia Cheng introduce you to a secret world: the artsy and emotional side of math. Dr. Cheng helps answer the age-old and (recently viral) question, “IS MATH REAL?” We chat about Fibonacci sequences, golden ratios, common core, loving thy neighbor, slide rules vs. calculators, imaginary numbers, the nature of zero, infinite cookies, and more. Turns out that math can change your relationships and permeate your every thought.. if you let it. Also: wtf, Barbie?
