Understanding the Impact of Ethanol on Liver Metabolism

Ethanol is processed in the liver by alcohol dehydrogenase to acetaldehyde, which is further metabolized. When the liver's capacity to metabolize ethanol is exceeded, it leads to peroxidation and acetaldehyde behaving toxically. This behavior attracts free radicals, immune cells, causes fat deposition, and alters metabolism within liver cells, leading to injury and toxicity. The histological features of liver damage from ethanol consumption can be similar to non-alcoholic metabolic dysfunction, making it challenging to distinguish them solely based on appearance.
