The focus should be on their policies, not their private conversations. Some people argue that private conversations reveal their authentic self, but this is a dangerous direction as we need responsible leaders, not authentic ones. Politics is not psychoanalysis, and leaders should carefully think about what they say. They should have the privacy to say stupid and terrible things as it is human nature.
