NOTE

Critique of Weight Loss Drugs and FDA Approval

Weight loss drugs, despite being touted as innovative solutions, typically function by reducing calorie intake. However, once individuals discontinue these drugs, they often experience weight regain, mainly in fat, while losing muscle mass. This cycle leads to increased insulin resistance, pre-diabetes, and higher risks of diseases like diabetes, heart disease, cognitive impairment, and cancer. The approval of such drugs by the FDA has resulted in a significant negative impact on the health of Americans, creating a costly and detrimental long-term scenario. The weight regain associated with muscle loss also predisposes individuals to frailty, loss of independence, reduced mobility, and insulin sensitivity. This approach not only leads to weight issues but also compromises overall health in the long run. Despite claims of being breakthrough solutions, these drugs offer only temporary relief and pose severe long-term health consequences. The focus should shift towards managing body composition effectively, rather than solely aiming for weight loss.
