He worked briefly as a lawyer but it didn't work out for him and he had financial difficulties throughout his life./nHe founded the American Letter Mail Company, a private post office that competed with the government's post office, in violation of the law./nSpooner argued that setting up a private post office was not unconstitutional and openly publicized his views./nThe government attempted to sue him but backed down by lowering postage rates, resulting in his company going out of business./nSpooner is credited with the title 'father of the three cents stamp'.
