NOTE

The Current Landscape of Language Models and Approaches

The open source community is working on fewer than 10 major language models that receive daily updates. Instead of competing with general purpose models, many are focusing on developing smaller, specialized models. This approach is seen as more efficient and cost-effective. Large language models are being targeted by vertical-specific models and open source contributions. The goal is to create smaller and more efficient models with fewer parameters. The energy and compute requirements of large models are a significant concern. The cost of running a cluster of thousands of GPUs can be substantial.
