The Complexities of Living in an Open Society

Living in an open society, like ancient Athens, comes with unique challenges. Individuals in such a society bear the burden of constantly defining their own identity and societal contribution. They need to be informed citizens, actively participating in the democratic process, which requires effort and might lead to doubts. Moreover, the willingness of an open society to question and change institutions and values brings about instability, contrasting with the rigidity of fascist or totalitarian societies.
