NOTE

The Post-World War I Division and Conflict for Self-Determination

After World War One, conflicting perspectives on imperialism, self-determination and the division of lands of the Ottoman Empire led to a compromise known as the mandate system. The Americans sought to end European imperialism and establish self-determination, while the British and French viewed it as a civilizing force or empire by another name. Despite the intended self-determination for Arabs, Jews, Turks, Armenians, and Kurds, the Turks expanded their territory at the expense of the Armenians and Kurds, ignoring the principle of self-determination. The Arabs and Jews also faced conflicts over mandates, with the League of Nations entrusting Britain with the mandate for Palestine.
