The Fundamental Attribution Error and Social Judgment
People often overestimate the negative judgments others will make about their social blunders while underestimating the same judgments they would pass on others for similar actions. This discrepancy stems from the fundamental attribution error, where individuals attribute others' mistakes to personal failings while attributing their own to external circumstances. In social settings, we unfairly view ourselves as socially awkward and judge others as confident, leading to a distorted perception of how we believe we are judged. Additionally, there is a common tendency to overrate one's own abilities, such as intelligence or driving skills, while simultaneously believing that others have a much lower opinion of us. This highlights a dual standard in self-perception where individuals think positively about themselves but assume others think negatively of them.
