Low HDL can be a factor in deciding whether to treat someone on the fence about starting a statin. However, it should be viewed in the context of overall risk factors and not used as an absolute predictor. The triglyceride to HDL cholesterol ratio is associated with insulin resistance in non-African-American patients.

Dan Rader is a Professor at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, where he conducts translational research on lipoprotein metabolism and atherosclerosis with a particular focus on the function of high-density lipoproteins (HDLs).
