Reflecting on experiences at Intelligenesis in 1999, the speaker explored the concept of creating powerful and general artificial intelligence systems, akin to a thinking machine. Despite the company's limitations in this area, the collapse of the company prompted the speaker to delve deeper into the idea. Influenced by Ray Kurzweil's 'The Age of Spiritual Machines', the speaker became convinced that highly sophisticated and versatile AI systems would emerge in the future, albeit a few decades from then.

For decades, Shane Legg has anticipated the arrival of “artificial general intelligence” or AGI.

In other words: an artificial agent that can do all the kinds of cognitive tasks that people can typically do, and possibly more...

Now as the Chief AGI Scientist and a co-founder of Google DeepMind, he stands by that prediction and is calling on the world to prepare.
