NOTE

The Vital Importance of REM Sleep

Studies have shown that selectively depriving rats of either non-REM or REM sleep have varying effects on their lifespan. Despite non-REM sleep being considered an older stage of sleep evolutionarily, the deprivation of REM sleep resulted in rats dying sooner, after 40 days, compared to lethality after 60 days when deprived of non-REM sleep. This suggests that REM sleep is crucial for supporting life, as evidenced by its emergence twice in evolution independently in birds and mammals.
