Making Sense with Sam Harris

NOTE

**The Ethical Significance of Proximity **

The ethical significance of proximity lies in the psychological difference between the suffering of those in our backyard and those in distant countries. However, this psychological difference should not have much moral significance. When we are able to see and interact with the problems in our backyard, we may feel more confident in our ability to make a difference. Nevertheless, there is now good research on effective nonprofit organizations that help those far away, which allows us to have a high level of confidence in the effectiveness of our actions. While the psychological impact of proximity is understandable, moral progress requires collapsing the psychological distance and not allowing suffering to be out of sight and mind.
