Nitric oxide plays a crucial role in regulating both blood pressure and insulin function in the body. It is the original vascular endothelial factor that allows blood vessels to expand to improve blood supply to various organs. The functionality of insulin is significantly dependent on the presence of nitric oxide. As we age, nitric oxide levels decline, impacting various bodily functions like blood pressure and blood sugar regulation. Approximately 50% of the nitric oxide in our bodies originates from the bacteria on the tongue that convert nitrates from vegetables like beets into nitrite, a precursor to nitric oxide. Disrupting these bacteria can potentially compromise nitric oxide production, affecting blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Studies have shown that the excessive use of antibacterial mouthwash is associated with an increased risk of developing diabetes and hypertension, highlighting the intricate relationship between oral microbiome, nitric oxide production, and metabolic health.
