Comparing RBC Folate and Serum Folate for Methyl Folate Deficiency

To accurately assess methyl folate deficiency, it is recommended to compare RBC folate with serum folate. Figlu is not a reliable indicator of methyl folate deficiency, as it rises due to total folate deficiency or other enzymatic activity issues. Markers of macrocytic megaloblastic anemia, such as elevated MCV, are also not indicative of methyl folate deficiency. Instead, the key markers for assessing methyl folate status are stratigene, homocysteine, methionine, glycine, sarcocine, and possibly the H.G.I.
