Importance of Controlling Eccentric Movements in Weightlifting
Controlling the eccentric phase of weightlifting is crucial as it requires less nervous system stimulus while still promoting muscle growth. The concentric phase, which naturally has some auto-control due to pushing back against resistance, should not be spastically done. Allowing a controlled descent rather than letting the weight drop can marginally reduce the risk of injury and maximize the muscle growth benefits of the eccentric phase.
