#212: Ego is the Enemy
The Art of Manliness
Passion versus Purpose
Passion, as defined by uncontrollable urges and unrestrained energy, can be detrimental as it leads to being whipped around by forces beyond one's control. On the contrary, purpose, rooted in a larger mission, allows for deliberation, patience, and control. Individuals driven by purpose can sacrifice, play the long game, and endure hardships, exemplified by Jackie Robinson's integration of baseball as a mission of immense purpose, rather than a mere expression of passion. While passion is zealous and uncontrolled, purpose enables individuals to act with courage and resilience, making them capable of containing themselves and exercising self-restraint.
