NOTE

Exploring the Challenges of Sorting and Democratizing Education

Sorting in education is attributed to the limited availability of resources rather than being a fundamental issue. The challenge lies in determining the criteria for sorting individuals, where traditional methods like standardized tests are juxtaposed with a holistic evaluation of a person's life achievements. To democratize education, enhancing the supply of educational opportunities is essential. The expansion of enrollment rates, although a commendable goal, does not necessarily lead to an increase in collective intelligence without a corresponding improvement in the quality of education. The lack of inspiring teachers and the predominant focus on job acquisition among students pose significant hurdles in fostering a culture of learning. The purpose of universities and colleges has shifted from signaling intelligence to primarily functioning as sorting mechanisms due to the decline in the value of degrees. Emphasizing learning outcomes over degrees is crucial in reshaping the education landscape towards a more meaningful and effective system.
