Learning Catalan: Is it a Dialect or a New Language?
Catalan is a language that is commonly used in the University of Barcelona, with all university papers and exams being in Catalan. However, some people argue that Catalan is a dialect while others consider it a completely new language. Despite these different opinions, those who know Spanish and those who know Catalan can understand each other with goodwill. Unlike Spanish, many books and TV shows are not translated into Catalan. This has made it easier for the speaker to understand Catalan. Personally, the speaker considers Catalan a dialect based on the similarity between standard Spanish and Catalan, comparing it to the difference between Bavarian and standard German.
