Debunking the Myth of Starvation Mode and Metabolism Slowdown During Weight Loss
The concept of 'starvation mode' where metabolism slows down has been debunked. It is not a reduction in resting metabolic rate, but rather adaptations that limit energy expenditure and drive to expend energy, such as nervous system changes and blood flow changes making high-intensity exercise harder. Non-exercise activity thermogenesis decreases, reducing physical activity levels. There is a case for a 'starvation mode,' but not in the way originally proposed. It does not cause metabolic damage but rather downregulates energy burning. Awareness of this helps in making informed choices like cutting food further, being more active, taking a break, or eating at maintenance to regulate the body's functions before resuming weight loss efforts.
