Searle argues that people often try to understand the human mind by comparing it to complex technologies of their time, such as a telephone switchboard or hydraulic systems. However, he believes that these comparisons are merely metaphors and do not truly capture the complexity of the mind. Searle suggests that the idea of a human mind emerging from a computer is also based on such metaphorical thinking. He criticizes the notion that increasing information processing and rule sophistication will lead to the emergence of a human-like mind from a computer.
