Overestimating the Influence of Self-Interest on Attitudes

Studies show that people tend to overestimate the influence of self-interest on others' attitudes. In one study, students overestimated the effect of sex on attitudes towards a budget proposal, as well as the influence of smoking status on attitudes towards tax increases and smoking restrictions. The reality was that people's attitudes were not as closely linked to their self-interest as the students had assumed.
