How Do You Do Up Front Data Definition?

There needs to exist some concept of a data contract, so an agreement between the sofway engineer and the data consumer. It's hard to do up front data definition if you're trying to convince a very fast moving start up. And then who owns these things? So that's number one. The next question is, ok, how do you, how do they do this?
