Understanding Mental and Metabolic Disorders
Trauma and childhood adversity increase the risk of various mental disorders and metabolic disorders. Early life trauma can significantly elevate the risk of conditions like autism spectrum disorder. Moreover, trauma and adversity in early life also raise the risk for metabolic disorders such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and premature mortality. By focusing on social determinants of health and various risk factors for mental health, this theory aims to integrate these factors in a coherent manner. The complexity of the science involved is evident, but a deep examination of mitochondria can provide insights into the imbalance of neurotransmitter systems and the higher levels of inflammation seen in patients with mental disorders.
