Invest Like the Best with Patrick O'Shaughnessy

NOTE

The Friction of Supply and Demand in the Market Place

The friction of supply or sign up is an esoteric feature of the market place. However, the speaker is skeptical of market place achievements that boast about supply or acquisition. From their experience, demand is the key factor in the market. High friction supplier sign up can worsen the situation, but the speaker has found that most suppliers are easy to sign up. However, the big market places the speaker has invested in are built on highly fragmented supply bases, typically consisting of small and medium businesses that are relatively new. The speaker gives the example of how dominant suppliers can hinder competition, such as in the case of online airline bookings. Competitors who tried to serve big chains like McDonald's or Subway went bankrupt. Although it's interesting to see these chains joining food delivery platforms now, this change took 15 years.
