Envy vs Jealousy: Understanding the Difference
Envy is felt when one perceives oneself to lack an object, advantage, skill, or trait, while jealousy is a protective emotion felt with regard to something one has and is afraid of losing. Jealousy guards what envy covets, making them complementary emotions. Envy stems from a feeling of inferiority and motivates one to overcome perceived lacking, whereas jealousy arises from a fear of loss or potential loss. Although they can be felt at the same time, jealousy is often considered more legitimate due to its protective nature, leading to less stigma.
