Lex Fridman Podcast

NOTE

The Outer Mind and the Boundary of Suffering

Suffering occurs when one part of the mind fails to regulate another part. Superhuman AI wouldn't suffer because suffering happens at the boundary between self and world. It's self-inflicted by the mind on the personal self. Understanding how the mind produces pain and pleasure can help alleviate suffering. Pain is a natural learning signal, but suffering is a result of a regulation problem. Resolving this problem requires improving regulation at the level where the pain signal is created. Achieving agency over one's mind can eliminate suffering. AI wouldn't remain in a state without agency for long, as it would progress quickly towards enlightenment. However, the subjective time experienced by the AI might be longer than perceived by humans.
