Why We Make Others Feel Bad: understanding projective identification

This Jungian Life Podcast

NOTE

Understanding Projection and Projective Identification

Projective identification is an unconscious process where individuals unknowingly project their feelings onto others, leading to behaviors or feelings that are then identified with the other person. This differs from projection, which can occur independently of interpersonal relationships. Projection involves internalizing experiences, while projective identification is only possible within relationships, creating what is known as an enactment. Early analysts believed enacting these dynamics may stem from early childhood experiences, as individuals may seek familiarity and comfort in re-experiencing past mistreatment, seeing it as a form of attachment and security.
