The role of the amygdala in panic and fear response

The amygdala is not responsible for producing the actual autonomic arousal associated with panic or fear, but rather for assigning importance to stimuli. This is evidenced by a case study of a patient with bilateral damage to the amygdala who was still capable of having a panic response. The amygdala receives information from the rest of the body and is involved in the cognitive evaluation of the panic and arousal response.
