Psychology Has It Backwards
Separate the Actor from the Act
Forgiveness requires a distinction between the person and their actions. It is possible to forgive the person while acknowledging that their actions may be unforgivable. Understanding the psychological state that led to these actions can foster compassion and empathy, allowing individuals to let go of personal grievances. By recognizing that a person’s distress can shape their behavior, one can avoid taking their actions personally and refrain from attributing ulterior motives. This perspective facilitates healing and emotional liberation.
