Instead of starting with yourself or your leadership agenda, begin with a focus on the other person. This includes written communication, where it is important to start with a 'you' instead of an 'I.' Leading with questions is also effective, whether it's asking about someone's weekend or their personal interests outside of work. The key is to always have them in mind when interacting with them. By doing this, you will find yourself listening more than talking.
