The Evolution of OpenAI's Goals and Structure
The goal of OpenAI is to ensure that artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits all of humanity. Initially, they believed open sourcing technology and operating as a nonprofit would achieve this. However, they realized that significant compute power is necessary for AI progress. A nonprofit structure couldn't support that. Therefore, they became a unique 'cap profit' company, where investors have limited returns. This is because if AGI becomes capable enough to replace all human tasks, it's not ideal for the company to focus on infinite profits. Although competition in AI may impact this, it remains their current thinking.
