The lack of bookkeeping procedures and control over inventories, coupled with the independent operations of GM subsidiaries, led to rapid expansion without sufficient cash flow. While some divisions were profitable, others were disasters, resulting in the need for heavy borrowing. This, combined with the panic of 1910, highlighted the danger of growing too fast without adequate financial management.
