Columbus takes people from different groups captive so that they can become interpreters and a emissaries between groups. He knows that its very important for him to bring back something of value back to spain in order to demonstrate that this crazy, even long, risky, expensive voyage was worth it. The term he uses as servants is an ambiguous term that more or less included what we would call slavery. So he takes some people to bring back to sp Spain as slaves.
