Studies have shown a strong connection between a history of autoimmune conditions and later diagnosis of psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia across different countries. Some individuals with severe mental health conditions, especially psychosis, may have their symptoms caused by the immune system attacking the brain directly. Treatment with antibodies removal can result in complete cures for these individuals. While this subset is small, there is a larger group of people with autoimmune conditions that lead to inflammation affecting the brain and contributing to mental health issues. This indicates that many mental health conditions might have underlying autoimmune factors that can be addressed with anti-inflammatory approaches in addition to other treatments.
