The speaker started a side project named Simple Poll, a Slack app, during university to impress computer science students and it became popular. Eventually, Simple Poll became the speaker's full-time job, with a team of seven to eight people. The speaker also worked at GitHub for two years, gaining valuable experience working on Ruby and Rails.
