The First Intifada
The first Intifada, also known as the first Palestinian uprising, began in December 1987 following a car accident involving an IDF Jeep and a truck of Palestinian laborers. The accident resulted in deaths, leading to funerals that sparked protests in Gaza, spreading to the West Bank. By early 1988, a full-blown uprising for Palestinian nationalism had emerged with Gaza as ground zero. During this time, Hamas, a splinter of the Muslim Brotherhood, shifted towards armed resistance against Israel.
