A careful history of the patient's relationships is more likely to permit the clinition to appreciate what is emotionally important. Clinician needs a theoretical approach to organize and make sense of the data. We need to ask patients for concrete examples to illustrate the generalizations patients often make about the relationships. One may deal with his defensiveness by acknowledging the positive aspects of the relationship and then asking for examples. This approach may result in examples being given that both reassure the patient and reduces a defensiveness. It also helps the clinitian in her formulation.
