Tomato plants encourage cannibalism among caterpillars by making their leaves unappetizing, causing them to eat each other. Corn plants sample caterpillar saliva to identify the species and emit chemicals to summon specific parasitic wasps that will inject eggs into the caterpillar, hatch larvae, and feed on the caterpillar from the inside, effectively eliminating the caterpillar threat.
