The adult Michael James, now living in Los Angeles and a father himself, expresses immense gratitude towards Mike Johnson and his wife for saving his life and preventing him from a grim fate. His transformation from a troubled past to a grateful individual is evident in his public speaking. Mike Johnson, now a young lawyer and father, was always destined for politics, evident from his early days advocating for conservative Christian causes. His colleagues even nicknamed him 'the Senator from Louisiana'. His journey to politics began in the Louisiana state legislature, where he focused on controversial issues such as opposing gay rights and pushing legislation to protect conservative Christians from accepting gay marriage. Despite his bill not becoming law, his stance resonated well with his constituents in a culturally conservative district, paving the way for his ascent to national office.
Congress is back in session and the House speakership is once again on the line. The New Yorker’s David Kirkpatrick explains how Mike Johnson got the gavel and whether he’ll be able to keep it.
This episode was produced by Amanda Lewellyn, edited by Amina Al-Sadi with help from Miranda Kennedy, fact-checked by Laura Bullard, engineered by David Herman, and hosted by Noel King.
