Ep 10. Maximizing learning through explicit instruction with Zach Groshell
Chalk & Talk
**Explicit instruction has to be interactive. You have to check understanding **
Explicit instruction involves breaking down complex material and presenting it in a simple and concrete way. After each small step, it's important to check for understanding. Explicit instruction is interactive, with activities like turn and talk, cold call, mini whiteboard, and finger voting. As students become more competent, we gradually fade our guidance and have them tackle more challenging problems. Eventually, they can work independently, even with extraneous information, enhancing transfer and long-term retention.
