The Legacy of General Gordon
Gordon was a very devout Christian who believed that he was a martyr figure./nHis orders were to evacuate the Egyptian garrisons and leave Khartoum, but he was forced to stay and his death was a trauma for Victorian Britain./nAfter he died, he was used as a symbol to rouse public opinion in Britain in support of a full-scale invasion of Sudan. This invasion took place 13 years after his death.
