NOTE

Treat Creators with Autonomy, Not Just Activity

Managing creators requires a fundamental shift from traditional oversight methods used for more routine activities. Organizations often mistakenly treat knowledge workers, or creators, like crankers, focusing on constant visible activity rather than fostering valuable creation. This leads to pseudo productivity, where mere busyness is mistaken for effectiveness. Instead, creators thrive on a blend of autonomy and accountability; they need the freedom to explore and recharge creatively without constant surveillance or excessive interruptions. Managing creators effectively means allowing them the space to work at their own pace and in a manner that leverages their skills while still holding them accountable for the value they generate. Acknowledging the unpredictable and varied nature of creative work is crucial, as trying to impose rigid structure and continuous activity can lead to burnout and dissatisfaction among creators. Organizations should clearly define roles and expectations—if the job requires consistent output, then be transparent about it, but do not expect creators to operate under the same constraints as cranking roles. Proper support and understanding of the unique needs of creators are essential for fostering a productive and fulfilling work environment.
