The Dangers of Subcutaneous Fat Expansion

Subcutaneous fat is a common fat depot where the body tends to store fat. When subcutaneous fat is overfilled, the fat vacuoles can expand excessively, causing the peri-lipened border to stretch severely and potentially leak fat into the surrounding adipose tissue cells, leading to cell death. The dead adipose tissue cell triggers a cleanup process by macrophages, resulting in an inflammatory response. This inflammation can spread through the body's systemic circulation, potentially causing damage when a significant amount of fat has been affected. On average, around 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of subcutaneous fat expansion may be sufficient to generate a concentration of cytokines capable of harming the body. Therefore, while subcutaneous fat is not inherently bad, excessive expansion can lead to harmful consequences.
