NOTE

The Importance of the Gut Microbiome

The microbiome and immune system in our bodies are interconnected and influence each other. The gastrointestinal-associated lymphatic tissue (GALT) holds 80% of the immune system and covers a massive surface area in the gut. The immune system is not meant to sterilize the body, but rather to coexist with microbes. Overuse of antimicrobials and a focus on sterility has led to the emergence of superbugs. Hospital-acquired infections are now a major cause of death. Monoculture practices in farming also contribute to the loss of microbial diversity. We need to shift our approach to embrace the organic nature of our bodies and ecosystems.
