Sam Altman on the Purpose of OpenAI
The purpose of OpenAI is to figure out how to build, deploy, and share safe, general artificial intelligence. The founders believed that not enough effort was being put into this field, despite its immense importance and potential catastrophic downside. OpenAI aimed to nudge the world towards taking AI safety seriously, especially considering that when it was founded in 2016, people thought the idea of AGI was crazy and unrealistic. However, with significant discoveries and engineering advancements, OpenAI has made substantial progress.
